Campaign To Save City Of Heroes: Freedom Has Failed

A month ago, fans and players of City Of Heroes: Freedom started a campaign to save the game from closure. An online petition was started and thousands of players even rallied in the game to show NCSoft that the game is not yet ready to die. Unfortunately, all the efforts put in by the community proved futile because the respond given by NCSoft didn't lean in their favor.

RIP City Of Heroes
(RIP City Of Heroes)

NCSoft will close City Of Heroes: Freedom on November 30, 2012 and, unfortunately, 20,000 signatures on an online petition and a rally attended by thousands of players weren't enough to stop it. Of course, the campaign wasn't limited to the online petition and the rally. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people tweeted, liked and shared the information to save COH everywhere.

Even celebrities like Sean Astin, Mercedes Lackey and others publicly offered their support to save City Of Heroes: Freedom. Yet, none of these had an ounce of effect in NCSoft's decision to kill the game.

Although, NCSoft did claim that it tried to sell the game but, unfortunately, it failed. Did NCSoft really tried to sell the game and the studio? Only NCSoft can answer that question. Just remember, NCSoft lost in court to Richard Garriot in a case involving a forged letter of resignation.
"We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful. Response to City of Heroes® Player and Fan Suggestions"

In any case, City Of Heroes: Freedom or simply City Of Heroes will forever remain in everyone's memory. The game will have a series of events before its funeral on November 30, 2012. Everyone who has an account can continue to enjoy the game until its bitter end.

For those who are looking for a new Superhero themed MMO, why not check out Champions Online. It has better graphics and the action is faster than that of City Of Heroes: Freedom. Also, it was developed by the original developers of City Of Heroes, Cryptic Studios.

By the way, Cryptic Studios was able to hire some people from Paragon Studios. "We’ve been very lucky to land some great talent from 38 Studios and Paragon Studios. - STO: State Of The Game, September 2012". Good for them but not so good for City Of Heroes: Freedom.

How To Get A Free VIP Gametime For City Of Heroes?

City Of Heroes now has a Free Account option. With a Free Account, you will be able to play City Of Heroes for FREE but with certain limits. These limits won't seriously affect how you play the game but they can be annoying. If you wish to play City Of Heroes without any limits then you must upgrade your account from Free to VIP and you can do that by paying a monthly fee of $14.99.

City Of Heroes Referral Page(City Of Heroes Referral Page)

Sounds pricey for a supposedly Free-To-Play MMO? Well, the good news is, if your account is already a VIP then you can continue playing as a VIP by inviting your friends to play City Of Heroes with you. City Of Heroes will award your account with a Free 30 Days Game Time, if and only if, your friend or friends decide to become VIP players as well.

For example, if you invite 10 friends to play City Of Heroes and 6 of them decided to upgrade their account from Free to VIP by paying the monthly subscription fee of $14.99 then you will receive 180 days of Game Time for FREE. Now, that is 180 days of Free VIP Game Time and your friend will also get 500 Paragon Points for FREE.

You can invite a friend to join City Of Heroes through your NCSoft Master Account or through the Paragon Market in-game. The instructions on how to accomplish this can be found on this page, Community Referral Program.

Remember, if your account is currently a VIP account then don't hesitate to take advantage of this opportunity. Who knows, you might get some Free VIP Game Time in City Of Heroes.
