Campaign To Save City Of Heroes: Freedom Has Failed

A month ago, fans and players of City Of Heroes: Freedom started a campaign to save the game from closure. An online petition was started and thousands of players even rallied in the game to show NCSoft that the game is not yet ready to die. Unfortunately, all the efforts put in by the community proved futile because the respond given by NCSoft didn't lean in their favor.

RIP City Of Heroes
(RIP City Of Heroes)

NCSoft will close City Of Heroes: Freedom on November 30, 2012 and, unfortunately, 20,000 signatures on an online petition and a rally attended by thousands of players weren't enough to stop it. Of course, the campaign wasn't limited to the online petition and the rally. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people tweeted, liked and shared the information to save COH everywhere.

Even celebrities like Sean Astin, Mercedes Lackey and others publicly offered their support to save City Of Heroes: Freedom. Yet, none of these had an ounce of effect in NCSoft's decision to kill the game.

Although, NCSoft did claim that it tried to sell the game but, unfortunately, it failed. Did NCSoft really tried to sell the game and the studio? Only NCSoft can answer that question. Just remember, NCSoft lost in court to Richard Garriot in a case involving a forged letter of resignation.
"We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful. Response to City of Heroes® Player and Fan Suggestions"

In any case, City Of Heroes: Freedom or simply City Of Heroes will forever remain in everyone's memory. The game will have a series of events before its funeral on November 30, 2012. Everyone who has an account can continue to enjoy the game until its bitter end.

For those who are looking for a new Superhero themed MMO, why not check out Champions Online. It has better graphics and the action is faster than that of City Of Heroes: Freedom. Also, it was developed by the original developers of City Of Heroes, Cryptic Studios.

By the way, Cryptic Studios was able to hire some people from Paragon Studios. "We’ve been very lucky to land some great talent from 38 Studios and Paragon Studios. - STO: State Of The Game, September 2012". Good for them but not so good for City Of Heroes: Freedom.

City Of Heroes Servers Are Going Bye, Bye!

City Of Heroes servers are going bye, bye because the game will soon reach the end of its life. The news about City Of Heroes shutting down definitely surprised me and it also surprised a lot of people as well because, as far as I know, City Of Heroes isn't experiencing any kind of problems. In fact, new updates were just recently released and some of them like the Water Blast Power Set are pretty cool.

Goodbye City Of Heroes
(Goodbye City Of Heroes)

The news about the impending closure of City Of Heroes servers was announced in the official website. From what I could understand from the announcement, the only reason given as to why City Of Heroes is closing had something to do with the company's realignment of focus and publishing support.

As a gamer, I have no idea what that means but that's why City Of Heroes and it's servers are closing. Actually, it's not just the servers. NCSoft has decided to shut down or close Paragon Studios which is the company developing City Of Heroes. If there is no Paragon Studios then there won't be any City Of Heroes.

As for the exact date and time City Of Heroes will turn its lights off, the announcement didn't say anything about it. I guess the purpose of the announcement is to prepare those who are still playing the game about the closure and to give them time to finish everything they're doing and to say goodbye to all their friends in the game.

Freedom wasn't the Future, it was DEATH!
(Freedom wasn't the Future, it was DEATH!)

City Of Heroes is the only game I bought or paid for online and I had lots of fun playing it. I briefly returned when it went Free-To-Play and played the game for a while before moving on to other games. My time playing City Of Heroes was well spent because I enjoyed every minute of it.

Anyway, if you want to get more information about City Of Heroes impending closure then click here. Also, if you are a former player and you still have the game installed on your computer then why not visit the game again and reminisce about the good old days of your career as a Superhero or a Villain.

Bye, bye City Of Heroes. Bye, bye Paragon Studios. Bye, bye City Of Heroes servers.
